Yeni Kuti, daughter of the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has commented on the ongoing disagreement between Wizkid and her brother, Seun Kuti, urging Nigerians to remain calm and united.
The tension began when Wizkid’s fans, known as Wizkid FC, started calling the Grammy-winning singer a “modern-day Fela Kuti.” Seun Kuti was not pleased with the comparison and publicly criticized Wizkid, which led to a heated back-and-forth online.
Yeni Kuti reflected on her relationship with Wizkid and his early days in the music industry.
“Wizkid is my padi. When two giants fight, the grass suffers. I refuse to enter this discussion because of some of the insults they are hurling. I love Wizkid a lot, and we have really come a long way together. I remember when he started, he was a backup singer at the shrine during Felabration. There is no way I can’t like him. I like him,” she said.
She also addressed how the feud has involved her father’s legacy, emphasizing that Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s name continues to command respect even decades after his death. Yeni Kuti urged that the conflict should not overshadow the unity and lessons that music brings.
“I wish it had been stopped early, but now let us mend fences. We are one people. Fela has been dead for 27 years, and for people to still be mentioning his name, it means he is great,” she added.
Her remarks have resonated with many Nigerians online, with fans applauding her call for peace and her reminder of Fela Kuti’s enduring legacy.
