Portugal coach, Roberto Martinez, has talked about how Cristiano Ronaldo affects the present Portugal squad.
He said the veteran attacker now plays mostly as a striker and praised his leadership, as well as his performance numbers and accomplishments.
Ronaldo is set to lead Portugal at their next FIFA World Cup, which will be his last, this summer.
Some people have questioned whether the 40-year-old forward still has a place in the team because of his age.
He has been scoring many goals, but several fans and experts have pointed out that his work rate on the pitch is not up to par.
But in an interview with ESPN, Roberto Martinez spoke about the Al-Nassr star, saying:
“I think we need to accept that everyone around the world knows Cristiano Ronaldo and has an opinion about him.
“The Cristiano Ronaldo who played for the national team 21 years ago is not the same player he is today. Now, he’s more of a player who focuses on positioning, like a striker.
“He’s a player who, for us, helps us finish games. He’s the all-time leading scorer. So, having a player who has scored 25 goals in the last 30 games for the national team is a real blessing.”
Martinez said there is a difference between the current Ronaldo and the younger version of him, and explained his present influence, saying:
“It’s about the present; we’re not talking about what he did 10 years ago. For me, his dedication means a lot. He is the only player globally who has played over 220 international matches.
“So, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s experience, having the commitment he has… he’s an example. He’s a player who motivates the team in the locker room.
“On the field, he’s a player who draws defenders and creates space for others, and for us, that’s really important. Plus, he also shares a lot of his experience with the team.
“A flaw? I believe a player’s main weakness is usually when they don’t show enough effort or don’t have the right mindset. A player who doesn’t show commitment or the right attitude isn’t selected for the national team.”
