One of the most influential players of Arsenal Football Club since the beginning of the 2024/25 season, Mikel Merino has been ruled out for the better part of the remainder of those season.
The Spanish international picked up a foot injury during the defeat against Manchester United in the Premier League. According to reports from the club Merino will be out for a lengthy period which will be a big blow to the Gunners quest to winning the Premier League.
What did Arsenal say about Mikel Merino’s Injury?
Arsenal confirmed that Merino will undergo an operation on the injured foot in the coming days.
After surgery he’ll begin a rehabilitation programme, with the club aiming for him to return to full training before the end of the season.
“Further to sustaining a foot injury towards the end of our game against Manchester United on January 25, subsequent assessments and specialist reviews have confirmed Mikel Merino has a bone injury in his right foot. Mikel will have surgery in the coming days and will then begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme. Mikel is expected to be out of action for an extended period, but return to full training before the end of the season. Everyone is fully focused on supporting Mikel to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”
Merino has been an important creative and versatile player for Arsenal contributing goals and assists this season so this is a significant loss for the team’s midfield depth. Some reports suggest he should still be fit in time for the World Cup this summer, though that depends on how his recovery goes.
