Nollywood actress Bolaji Ogunmola has spoken out against landlords who increase house rent after tenants spend their own money renovating rented apartments.
The actress shared her frustration on social media, describing such actions as “wickedness of the highest level.” According to her, it is unfair for tenants to invest heavily in fixing up a property only for landlords to later raise the rent or force them to vacate.
Bolaji noted that many tenants end up spending double the rent to make apartments livable, only to be penalised afterward by sudden rent increases.
Reacting to the conversation generated under her post, the actress revealed that she is someone who prefers leaving a place better than she met it. However, she warned tenants in Lagos to be cautious.
She advised that before carrying out any repairs or renovations, tenants should first call their landlords and agree on clear terms. According to her, if no agreement is reached, it is better not to renovate at all or simply rent a brand-new apartment.
