Former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher, has told Liam Delap he made a bad choice by joining Chelsea.
He suggests the young attacker should have joined a different Premier League team instead.
Delap, who is 23 years old, has only managed to score one goal in the league for Chelsea since he joined the club from Ipswich Town for £30 million last summer.
Several football clubs showed interest in signing Delap after he scored more than ten goals in the Premier League last season, even though he played for Ipswich, a team that was relegated.
Manchester United were almost done signing Delap, but the ex-Manchester City player wanted to go to Chelsea instead.
Carragher says Delap made a bad decision by joining Chelsea, because the step from Portman Road to Stamford Bridge was too big.
‘It was a bad move,” Carragher, a former England player said on the Stick to Football podcast.
“Moving to Chelsea was a bad decision. I just think that young players, when they’re on their way up and improving, the move from Ipswich to Chelsea was too big of a jump, he needed a team in between.
“Somewhere like Everton. If you play as the centre forward for Everton and you play in every game, you know that even if you have some bad matches, you’ll still get to play.
“At Chelsea, he never knows if he’ll get to play, even if he starts. Sometimes the gap is too wide, and you really need a team in the middle.”
Delap is ranked below fellow Chelsea summer signing, Joao Pedro in the team hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
