Sporting director Peter Niemeyer has confirmed that Victor Boniface is unlikely to feature again this season for SV Werder Bremen.

Boniface suffered a knee injury during training in December and subsequently underwent surgery earlier this year. The Nigeria international is currently continuing his rehabilitation programme.

Providing an update on the striker’s condition, Niemeyer admitted that it remains difficult to determine when the forward will regain full fitness.

“He’s completing his rehab in Leverkusen, and we’re pleased with every bit of progress. But it’s still impossible to predict how quickly he’ll be fully fit again,” Niemeyer told DeichStube.

“Because of the rehabilitation timeline, we do not expect Victor to play for Werder again this season.”

Boniface joined Bremen on a season-long loan from Bayer 04 Leverkusen last summer.

The 25-year-old made 11 league appearances for the Green and Whites, registering two assists before his injury setback.
