FIFA, the governing body of world football, is reportedly preparing to expand the FIFA Club World Cup from 32 teams to 48 teams, starting with the 2029 edition.

The move comes even before the newly revamped 32-team format has fully settled, signalling FIFA’s ambition to further globalise the competition and increase its commercial appeal. The expanded format is expected to mirror the growth strategy seen in international football, with the men’s Club World Cup also moving to 48 nations in 2026.

The last edition which was hosted in the United States of America was the first edition that will have 32 clubs. Chelsea Football Club were the winners of the competition.

Why did FIFA increase the number of clubs from 32 to 48?

FIFA aims to offer more clubs from Africa, Asia, North America, and South America the opportunity to compete on the global stage, rather than limiting the tournament to a select group of elite European and South American sides.

UEFA’s support in this campaign will pave the way for more European clubs to secure qualification slots under the new structure. This will give room for some top clubs like Manchester United and some other top teams in Europe.
