Fifa’s Delay In 2026 World Cup Verdict Raises Concerns Ahead Of Super Eagles Four-nation Tournament

Earlier this week, the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, confirmed that the Super Eagles will participate in a Four-Nation Invitational Tournament in Amman, Jordan.

Hosts Jordan, Iran, and Costa Rica are the other teams taking part in the tournament.

Here is the kicker: the fixtures will be played during next month’s FIFA men’s international match window.

It is the same window when the Intercontinental World Cup playoffs will be held.

This has led to worry among fans, as the NFF has a pending complaint with FIFA over DR Congo’s use of ineligible players during the CAF World Cup playoffs, which the Super Eagles lost on penalty kicks.

“Of course, the NFF is unsure, like we all are,” Ope Adebari, a sports analyst, reporter and producer.

“It makes sense to move on and involve the Super Eagles in the 4-nation tournament as they prepare for their involvement in the next Africa Cup of Nations.”

But why has there been a delay from FIFA in delivering a verdict in the NFF’s case against DR Congo?

“I’m quite curious to know why the announcement of the verdict has taken so long,” Adebari said.

“The period of waiting has given room for rumours.

“I’m aware that members of the panel had a meeting two weeks ago, yet it’s still radio silence from their end.

“In my opinion, I think Nigerians should move on.

“I don’t think any of the Congo players had questionable documents regarding their citizenship.”

Of course, whatever verdict FIFA reaches, will have far reaching implications.

Adebari added: “If Nigeria’s appeal is granted, it means that the team will participate in the Intercontinental World Cup playoff scheduled to happen in Mexico.

“This also means that the Super Eagles will not be able to participate in the 4-nation tournament set to happen in Jordan.”
