Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has provided an update on the condition of Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka ahead of Saturday’s decisive Championship fixture against Bristol City.

Onyeka, who joined the Sky Blues on loan in the winter transfer window, was forced off early in the second half of the victory over Stoke City.

The 28-year-old had received treatment in the first half after picking up a knock but managed to complete the opening 45 minutes before being replaced ten minutes after the restart by Victor Torp.

Fatigue the main concern

Lampard indicated that the substitution was largely precautionary, citing physical demands rather than a serious injury.

Yeah, I’m not sure. I think it’s a lot of fatigue and maybe a bit of a knock,” he said. “He was struggling a bit so he had to come off.”

Since arriving at the CBS Arena, Onyeka has featured in four matches in just 12 days, playing key roles in wins over Middlesbrough, West Brom, Sheffield United and Stoke City.

Lampard admitted he had considered resting the midfielder but opted to start him due to his growing importance to the side.

“There was a question about playing him, probably, physically, but the influence that he’s had so far meant that he started the game,” he added.

Focus on Bristol City trip

Coventry remain firmly in the race for automatic promotion to the Premier League, and careful management of Onyeka’s workload will be essential.

With the season entering a decisive stretch, Lampard will be hoping the Nigerian can recover fully and maintain his influence as the Sky Blues push to sustain their form in the Championship run-in.
