A man identified as Opeyemi Tope Lawal has di£d after he was allegedly assaulted by some park officials inside the Marina car park in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State.
The incident happened on Sunday, March 8.
According to reports, Lawal’s hands and feet were tied up after he was accused of theft.
A Facebook user, Sheriffdeen Ojon, who shared details of the incident on Monday, March 9, alleged that Lawal was tortured by two car park officials before he succumbed to his injuries.
Residents pleaded for Lawal to be released but their pleas fell on deaf ears. Lawal also begged them and told them that he was about to di£, but they didn’t listen to him.
Ojon wrote in part, “They begged him to untie Tope Lawal, but he refused until he gave up.
“The young man also begged, saying he was about to di£, but he did not respond and called himself Alhaji.”
Following the incident, some residents on Monday went to the police division in the area to protest Lawal’s d£ath.
Pictures of the victim’s lifeless body shared on Facebook showed bruises on some parts of his body. Blood can also be seen gathered in his eyes, which remained open in de@th.
A video seen by LIB shows a man dragging the suspect by his shirt while accusing him in Yoruba of k!lling his elder brother.
“You said you’ve been targeting my brother since. And now you’ve k!lled him, abi?” the man asked as he dragged Alhaji as a crowd gathered.
Another video shared on Facebook showed locals holding placards, protesting the de@th of Lawal.
One woman is heard narrating how several market women pleaded with Alhaji to free Lawal but he refused.
“There is no way they didnt beg Alhaji. Since 12pm, those women, they begged Alhaji profusely. But he told them to leave that it’s none of their business,” a woman is heard saying.
In an update, Ojon stated that the culprits have been arrested.
He wrote: “They are currently detained at Lion Building Police Division Lagos Island.
He added: “I am delighted that the culprits or kille&rs are currently in detention under the watchful eye of my isale eko dear brother, the integrity-driven DPO of Lion Building, CSP Olumide Junaid.
“I am assured that he will not compromise until the case is transferred to the State CID Panti Lagos for more investigation.”
Friends have gone on Facebook to mourn Lawal while calling for justice.
