The race to become Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper has intensified into a three-way battle following uncertainty surrounding Stanley Nwabali’s club future.

With Nwabali currently clubless, three other contenders have emerged, forcing Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle to reconsider his goalkeeping hierarchy ahead of Nigeria’s international friendlies against Iran and Jordan.

NEWSUNPLUG reports that Chelle recently named his squad to face Iran and Jordan on Friday, March 27 and on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, in Turkey.

The Malian included goalkeepers, Francis Uzoho of Omonia FC, Udinese’s Maduka Okoye, and Adebayo Adeleye of Volos FC in the squad, as Nwabali’s name was missing.

DAILY POST reports that Nwabali had established himself as the Super Eagles’ No. 1 following an impressive run at both the 2023 and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, where his commanding presence and penalty-saving heroics made him a fan favourite.

But his current situation as a free agent after terminating his contract with South African club, Chippa United at the beginning of February has taken an uncertain turn in his career.

Nwabali, who is currently in search of a new club after leaving Chippa United, had been linked with Kaizer Chiefs and teams across Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

The 29-year-old had expressed his willingness to join any club, whether local or international, as he embarks on the next phase of his career.

However, this report examines the implications of Nwabali’s clubless status regarding his future with the national team and his position as Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper.

The question echoing in the stands and on social media is no longer “When will Nwabali return?” but rather a more final, anxious query: Is his reign as the Super Eagles’ No. 1 already over?

Speaking with DAILY POST on Tuesday, Lagos-based journalist, Femi Fabunmi, believes Nwabali will definitely get back his first-choice goalkeeper position in the Super Eagles squad, provided he’s able to get a new club in the summer transfer window.

He, however, fears that Nwabali could be saying goodbye to the national team if he remains clubless for a lengthy time, probably beyond the upcoming summer transfer window.

“Stanley Nwabali will definitely get his shirt back provided he’s able to get a club in the summer,” Fabunmi told DAILY POST.

“Luckily for him no major competition for the Super Eagles in the next few months. Francis Uzoho and others are not likely to displace him.

“However, Nwabali could be saying his goodbyes to Nigeria’s Super Eagles if he remains clubless for a lengthy time, and it would be because of rustiness.

“In the meantime, let’s see what the likes of Uzoho, Okoye and others can do.

“Nwabali’s heroics will be very hard to do away with,” he stated.
