Victor Boniface has been criticized over his fitness levels as he works towards a return from injury, with former players questioning his condition following his comeback to training at Werder Bremen.

The striker, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, has only recently resumed activity after more than three months out with a knee problem that required surgery. However, attention has shifted from his recovery progress to concerns about his physical shape.

Harnik questions professionalism

Former Bundesliga forward Martin Harnik delivered a blunt assessment, criticising Boniface for returning to training out of condition.

“When I join team training, I have to be as fit as possible, and he’s confused fit with overweight,” Harnik said.

“He’s carrying a considerable amount of weight… coming back from this injury in a terrible state – that’s unprofessional.”

He further warned about the long-term impact, stating that excess weight could increase strain on the striker’s knees and hinder his ability to perform at elite level.

Kruse offers balanced view

Ex-Germany international Max Kruse adopted a more measured stance, acknowledging the challenges players face during long injury layoffs.

“I have to be very careful with my statements… but I can somewhat understand how one feels about this,” Kruse said.

Despite that, he flagged concerns over Boniface’s trajectory, adding: “He actually still has his best years ahead of him… he has the potential to be one of the best strikers in Europe.”

Injury setbacks disrupt momentum

Boniface’s current situation reflects a broader pattern of recurring fitness issues. Since early 2024, he has dealt with multiple setbacks, including hamstring, thigh and knee injuries.

A proposed move to AC Milan previously collapsed due to concerns raised during medical checks, underlining the long-term nature of those issues.

On the pitch, the impact has been significant. After excelling during Leverkusen’s title-winning campaign, the 25-year-old has struggled for rhythm at Bremen, making just 11 appearances without scoring.

Race to regain form

Bremen remain cautious but optimistic about his return, with the club currently battling to secure Bundesliga safety.
