U.S. and Iran may resume talks this week despite Iranian Port blockade

Negotiators from the United States and Iran could return to Islamabad as early as this weekend to resume critical discussions aimed at ending the war, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The potential for renewed diplomatic engagement follows a collapse in weekend negotiations that prompted Washington to initiate a maritime blockade on Iranian ports. While the blockade has drawn sharp rhetoric from Tehran, the prospect of continued dialogue has provided some relief to global energy markets, pushing benchmark oil prices back below $100 on Tuesday.

The weekend’s high-level talks, led by U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, ended without a breakthrough, casting doubt on a two-week ceasefire that currently has one week remaining.

“No firm date has been set, with the delegations keeping Friday through Sunday open,” a senior Iranian source noted regarding the possible return to Pakistan. President Donald Trump added that Iran had been in contact on Monday and expressed a desire to reach a deal, though he emphasized that he would not sanction any agreement that allows Tehran to possess a nuclear weapon.

“Warning: If any of these ships come anywhere close to our BLOCKADE, they will be immediately ELIMINATED,” Trump later posted on social media, referring to the remnants of the Iranian navy.

The geopolitical tension has had a significant impact on the global economy, prompting the International Monetary Fund to cut its growth outlook on Tuesday. The IMF warned that the world could teeter on the brink of recession if oil prices remain above $100 through 2027.

Meanwhile, NATO allies such as Britain and France have stated they will not be drawn into the conflict by participating in the blockade, and China has condemned the U.S. measures as “dangerous and irresponsible.”

Complicating the mediation efforts is the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. While Iran insists that these hostilities should be covered by the existing ceasefire, the U.S. and Israel maintain that the campaign in Lebanon is separate.

Amidst this complexity, U.S. Vice President Vance reiterated that Washington remains firm on its nuclear demands, stating that any enriched material must be removed from Iran with a verifiable mechanism in place to ensure no nuclear weapons are developed.

Despite the aggressive maneuvers and rhetoric, the ceasefire has largely held over its first week as both sides weigh the political and economic costs of further escalation.
