The Ghana Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspected gang leader and an accomplice in connection with the armed robbery attack on the Berekum Chelsea football team bus, which led to the d3ath of forward Dominic Frimpong.

The incident occurred on the Bibiani–Goaso road last Sunday, April 12, 2026 after the Ghana Premier League side had played a league fixture against FC Samartex at DUN’s Park.

According to police reports, armed men blocked the road and opened fire when the bus driver attempted to reverse after noticing the obstruction.

Players and officials fled into nearby bushes as gunfire erupted.

During the chaos, 20-year-old forward Dominic Frimpong, who was on loan from Aduana FC, sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Six other players suffered minor injuries.

Following the deadly incident, the Inspector-General of Police deployed a combined team of intelligence officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate Headquarters, the Anti-Robbery Unit, CID Headquarters, and the Ashanti South and Ashanti Regional Police Commands to conduct a manhunt for the perpetrators.

On Wednesday, April 15, 2026, an intelligence-led operation at Atimatim in Kumasi led to the arrest of suspect Mohammed Ahmed, alias “I Can Do”, identified as the gang leader, and suspect Bawa Gideon.

The arrest followed a dramatic confrontation in which the suspects attempted to flee and opened fire on the police.

One of the suspects sustained injuries during the exchange of fire and has since been conveyed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he is receiving treatment under police guard.

The other remains in custody, assisting with investigations.

During the operation, police retrieved a pistol with two rounds of .32 ammunition, eleven BB cartridges, a “blantine”, pepper spray, desert boots, assorted mobile phones, and a black pullover.

During interrogation, suspect Mohammed Ahmed admitted involvement in several robberies, including the Nkawie robbery, the Fufuso mobile vendor attack, and the attack on the Berekum Chelsea FC bus.

He further mentioned accomplices identified as Dauda, Huefe, and A.T., who are currently on the run.

The police have declared the three accomplices wanted and are appealing to the public for information leading to their arrest.

Frimpong, who had shown promise this season with two goals in 13 league appearances, has since been mourned across the football community.

FIFA, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and several clubs have paid tribute to the young forward, describing his d3ath as a major loss to the game.
