A gunman has opened fire on tourists visiting the Teotihuacan pyramids in Mexico, killing a Canadian woman and injuring several others before taking his own life, authorities have said.

Police confirmed that the attacker shot multiple people at the popular tourist site, which is one of the most significant historical and cultural landmarks in the country. The suspect later died by suicide at the scene.

Mexico’s security cabinet said those injured in the attack are receiving medical treatment, though details on their conditions have not yet been disclosed.

Canada’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the death of one of its citizens.

The Teotihuacan complex, a pre-Hispanic city, is widely regarded as one of the most important cultural centres in Mesoamerica and attracts large numbers of international visitors each year.
