Nigeria’s new Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, has said President Bola Tinubu is committed to resolving long-standing grievances fueling insecurity in Nigeria and the wider region.

Ibrahim made the remarks after presenting his Letter of Credence to UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the United Nations headquarters in New York City on Monday, April 20.

He said Tinubu believes Nigeria’s strengthened presence at the UN will provide essential support in addressing security concerns both locally and globally.

According to him, the president is focused on tackling religious conflicts and other crises rooted in long-standing grievances, describing their resolution as critical to strengthening peace and safety.

Ibrahim added that Nigeria is committed to mobilising international support to address domestic security challenges while also confronting threats linked to the Sahel and the West African sub-region.

He noted that resolving internal grievances and regional instability remains the foundation for lasting security in Nigeria and beyond.

The diplomat said Nigeria is renewing its multilateral engagement at a critical time, noting that his appointment signals the country’s return to active diplomatic leadership at the UN after more than two years without a substantive permanent representative.

“President Tinubu is confident that, as Nigeria’s ambassador and head of mission to the UN, I will work closely with you to tackle the issues we share,” he said.

Ibrahim also reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for UN reforms and called for stronger African representation on the Security Council, describing a permanent African seat as a significant historical milestone that could enhance global security.

He highlighted the administration’s economic reforms, acknowledging short-term challenges but expressing confidence in long-term gains.

“All reforms in the short term come with some level of pain, but the results have been remarkable,” he said.

He added that Nigeria would continue to champion international tax reforms, climate action, and multilateral cooperation to promote peace and development.

Ibrahim reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to playing a leading role in achieving the UN’s core goals, while also stressing the importance of peace to economic stability, including the global significance of the Strait of Hormuz.

At the event, Guterres emphasised Nigeria’s importance in strengthening multilateralism.

The ambassador also met with Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, who welcomed his appointment and noted that Nigeria’s absence had been felt.
