Authorities are currently combing through messages and digital history linked to 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, the suspect accused of opening fire during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.

Investigators are seeking to understand how a respected California teacher and mechanical engineer allegedly transformed into a would-be assassin targeting members of the administration.

Allen, a resident of Torrance, California, reportedly sent a chilling apology to his family before the attack.

In the message, he stated, “Let me start off by apologizing to everyone whose trust I abused,” while clarifying that he intended to target administration officials due to political anger.

He reportedly closed the note by saying, “I experience rage thinking about everything this administration has done,” and referred to President Trump as a “traitor.”

Public records show Allen was a 2017 mechanical engineering graduate from the California Institute of Technology (CalTech), where he was involved in Christian Fellowship and developed a prototype emergency brake for wheelchairs.

Professionally, he was named “teacher of the month” in December 2024 at C2 Education and was an indie video game developer who published a game called Bohrdom on Steam.

According to the White House, Allen’s sister informed law enforcement that her brother had become increasingly involved in radical left-wing activism in Los Angeles, including joining “The Wide Awakes.”

Investigators found that Allen legally purchased a .38-caliber semi-automatic pistol in 2023 and a 12-gauge shotgun in 2025, passing federal background checks both times.

Following a cross-country train journey from Los Angeles, Allen checked into the Washington Hilton, the venue for the annual dinner.

On Saturday night, Allen allegedly attempted to storm past security outside the ballroom. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche reported that the suspect “got off a couple shots,” striking a Secret Service agent who was fortunately wearing a bulletproof vest.

“We’re still looking to try to understand a motive. From our preliminary investigation, it does appear the suspect was targeting members of the administration,” Blanche stated.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro confirmed that the suspect faces two counts of using a firearm and one count of assault on a federal officer.

President Trump has since described the suspect’s social media history as “anti-Christian,” while the suspect’s note argued his actions did not clash with his faith, claiming, “Turning the other cheek when someone else is oppressed is not Christian behavior; it is complicity in the oppressor’s crimes.”

Authorities continue to interview family members and neighbors in both Maryland and California as they piece together the timeline.
