The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned that visa overstays by Nigerian travellers could impact other citizens applying to enter the U.S.

In an advisory issued on Monday, the mission stressed that compliance with U.S. immigration laws is critical to preserving travel opportunities for Nigerians visiting for education, business, tourism, and family purposes.

It noted that when travellers overstay their visas or breach entry conditions, it can affect how future applications from the same country are assessed.

“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the mission said.

“Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.”

The U.S. Mission also raised concerns over visa fraud and misuse of travel documents, describing them as serious offences that undermine the integrity of the immigration system.

Individuals with credible information about visa fraud were encouraged to report it directly to official consular fraud prevention channels via AbujaFPU@state.gov or LagosFPU@state.gov.
