A Russian military base in the Khabarovsk region has been rocked by an explosion reportedly targeting Azatbek Omurbekov, a senior officer accused by Ukraine of war crimes during the invasion.

Omurbekov, often referred to as the “Butcher of Bucha,” is alleged to have commanded troops involved in atrocities in Bucha in 2022. Ukrainian authorities have declared him wanted over those actions.

The blast occurred at a military garrison in the village of Knyaz-Volkonskoe-1. Reports suggest one person, identified as Lieutenant Colonel Kuzmenko, was killed, while several others were injured. Omurbekov is believed to have been the intended target, though his condition remains unclear, with some accounts claiming he narrowly survived.

Russian authorities have reportedly classified details of the incident and imposed restrictions on information, with limited official confirmation available.

The base where the explosion happened is linked to the Eastern Military District, where Omurbekov has held a senior training command role since 2023. He previously led the 64th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade, which operated in Bucha during the early phase of the war.

The events in Bucha drew global condemnation after evidence emerged of civilians being killed, tortured, and subjected to severe abuses during the occupation. Survivors and investigators documented multiple cases of violence, contributing to ongoing international efforts to hold those responsible accountable.

Despite the allegations, Omurbekov has received promotions within the Russian military and was awarded the title “Hero of Russia” for his service.

The explosion adds to a series of incidents targeting military figures linked to the conflict, though responsibility for this attack has not been officially confirmed.
