The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, met with the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to request increased security collaboration ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Describing security as both the first mile and the last mile of the electoral process, Amupitan emphasized that the safety of voters and personnel is fundamental to a credible election.

During the visit in Abuja, the INEC Chairman confirmed that the commission has commenced full preparations for the upcoming polls. According to the revised timetable necessitated by the Electoral Act 2026, the Presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, followed by the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections on February 6, 2027.

Amupitan identified several critical factors currently undermining public confidence and posing risks to national security, including electoral malpractices, vote trading, and localized violence.

He noted that the activation of political party activities, such as ward congresses and conventions, serves as a security trigger that requires immediate and sustained attention from law enforcement.

To address these challenges, the Chairman urged the police to conduct comprehensive risk assessments to identify potential flashpoints before they escalate into open conflict.
