Lionel Messi delivered another standout performance as Inter Miami defeated Portland Timbers 2-0 to secure their first victory at the club’s new stadium.

The Argentine captain scored once and provided an assist in an impressive first-half performance that helped Miami end their frustrating start at Nu Stadium.

Messi extends impressive scoring form

Messi opened the scoring with his 12th Major League Soccer goal of the season, finishing off a flowing team move with a powerful left-footed strike.

The 38-year-old later turned creator, driving into the penalty area before setting up German Berterame for Miami’s second goal shortly before half-time.

The former Barcelona forward has now registered five goals and six assists across his last four appearances.

Inter Miami finally celebrate at Nu Stadium

Miami moved into the 26,700-capacity Nu Stadium in April after spending six years in Fort Lauderdale.

However, they struggled initially at their new home, drawing three matches and losing one before finally breaking through with victory against Portland.

MLS Cup holders remain in title race

Managed by Guillermo Hoyos, Inter Miami now sit second in the Eastern Conference with 28 points from 14 matches, two behind leaders Nashville SC.

Miami will face Philadelphia Union in their final fixture before the World Cup break as they continue their bid to retain the MLS Cup title won last season.
