Two brothers, Michael Miap Lakung,43, and Lapkang Miap Lakung, 37, lost their lives in a road traffic crash at Kwang community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The accident which occurred around 8:10 a.m. on Monday, May 18, 2026 near a filling station in the community, involved a trailer and a Toyota Corolla.

According to the burial arrangements released by the family, a wake keep will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at St. Finbar’s Catholic Church Rayfield, Jos by 5:30 pm.

The remains of the deceased are expected to leave the old Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) mortuary by 7 am for Kwalla community, where a requiem mass will take place at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Kwalla, Qua’an-Pan LGA, Plateau State, by 10 am.

They will be laid to rest at the family compound in Kwalla.

Confirming the incident to Punch in Jos on Monday night, the Federal Road Safety Corps Public Education Officer in Plateau State, Peter Longsan, said five persons were involved in the crash.

“Yes, the road traffic crash happened around 8:10 am today (Monday) involving a trailer and one other Toyota vehicle,” Longsan said.

“Unfortunately, two people were k!lled during the incident. They were five people involved.”

Longsan disclosed that police officers arrived at the scene before FRSC personnel and evacuated the bodies of the victims.

“Policemen arrived there before our men and they were able to carry the corpses of the deceased to the Plateau State Specialists Hospital where they were deposited.

He added that FRSC officials later cleared the road to ensure free flow of traffic.

“Meanwhile, our men ensured there was no obstruction and were able to clear all obstructions on that road,” Longsan stated.

The FRSC attributed the crash to reckless driving and excessive speeding.

“The crash could be attributed to dangerous driving and excessive speeding and we are calling on the motorists to avoid excessive speeding,” Longsan said.

He explained that many trailer drivers now use the bypass after being restricted from roads within the Jos metropolis, but often drive recklessly on the route.

“We understand that most of these trailer owners knowing that the roads inside the metropolis have been prohibited from them to follow, so they take alternative route. However, they are speeding excessively,” he said.

Longsan urged motorists using the bypass to adhere strictly to speed limit.

“We advise that if they are taking the bypass, they should move at a reasonable speed so that they don’t constitute danger to other road users,” he added.

Meanwhile, grieving family members, friends and sympathizers, have mourned the brothers, describing the incident as painful and devastating.
