Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has presented a new housing proposal aimed at addressing Nigeria’s worsening accommodation shortage through large-scale public housing development.

Sowore said that if elected, his government would restore mass public housing programmes nationwide while scrapping what he called exclusionary policies that separate low-income earners from wealthier citizens.

He explained that his plan would promote mixed-income residential estates where workers, students, families, and professionals can live together within the same communities, rather than being divided by class-based housing systems.

In a statement posted on social media, the AAC flag bearer noted that his housing model would also include essential amenities and modern public infrastructure within residential areas.

According to him, the proposed estates would feature facilities such as green spaces, schools, shopping centres, recreational theatres, clinics, playgrounds, transport links, and other community services integrated into housing developments.

Sowore argued that housing should not be limited to shelter alone but should serve as a tool for social development and improved quality of life.

He also criticised Nigeria’s political elite, accusing them of mismanaging public resources meant for the wider population.

He claimed that many influential figures have diverted public funds to acquire luxury properties while millions of citizens continue to face poor housing conditions and rising rent pressures.

“For too long, corrupt elites have hijacked land and houses meant for the people, using stolen public funds to build mansions they don’t even live in. That era will end,” he stated.

Sowore further revealed that his administration would target the construction of one million public housing units across the country as part of efforts to expand access to affordable accommodation.

He described the proposed homes as affordable, environmentally sustainable, and designed to restore dignity to ordinary Nigerians.

“Our goal is to build 1 million decent public homes across Nigeria, affordable, dignified, environmentally responsible, and built for workers, families, students, and communities,” he said.

He concluded by saying Nigeria is entering a new phase of public housing reform, insisting that decent shelter should be treated as a fundamental right rather than a privilege reserved for the wealthy.
