Barcelona confirmed the marquee signing of England winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United on Friday, May 29, in a deal that could rise to €80 million ($93 million).
The 25-year-old left winger has agreed to a five-year contract keeping him at the club until June 30, 2031.
Gordon enjoyed a sensational season with Newcastle, finishing as the club’s top scorer with 17 goals, including an impressive 10-goal haul in the Champions League. His high-profile arrival bolsters a reshaping Barcelona attack that is losing veteran Polish striker Robert Lewandowski at the end of his contract, and potentially Marcus Rashford following the conclusion of his loan spell from Manchester United.
The newly crowned La Liga champions are enjoying more economic breathing room within the league’s strict financial fair play rules, aided by a partially rebuilt, reopened Camp Nou stadium and consecutive years of reduced expenditure.
Offloading Lewandowski’s wages and clearing Rashford’s loan off the books has created significant financial margin. Barcelona’s hierarchy is reportedly keen to strengthen further, with Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez linked to Catalonia, and a potential permanent move for Rashford still not ruled out.
Further squad adjustments could see departures for players like Roony Bardghji, Ansu Fati, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
For Newcastle, Gordon’s departure represents the second-largest sale in club history, trailing only Alexander Isak’s £125 million ($168 million) move to Liverpool last summer.
The Premier League side is already scouting replacements, with Real Betis winger Ez Abde high on their radar. Meanwhile, Everton is set for a financial windfall; having sold Gordon to Newcastle for £45 million in 2023, the Merseyside club secured a 15% sell-on clause for any profits generated from his departure from St James’s Park.
