Manchester United icon, Wayne Rooney has expressed his desire to see Scott McTominay rejoin the club, expressing disbelief that the Red Devils allowed him to leave in the first place.
The 29-year-old midfielder developed through Manchester United’s youth system and made 255 appearances for the team between 2017 and 2024.
Two years ago, the decision was made to transfer him, with Napoli acquiring him for just over £25 million to play in Serie A.
This move proved to be a brilliant decision for the Italian club, as McTominay shone and helped secure the Serie A title in his debut season.
He has continued to excel as a goal-scoring midfielder for both his club and the national team, playing a crucial role in leading Scotland to their first World Cup in 28 years this summer.
McTominay has transitioned from a peripheral player to an elite performer, and Rooney would be thrilled to see him return to Old Trafford with his newfound impact.
He said on The Wayne Rooney Show, “I was shocked that Manchester United let him go when they did, as he clearly puts in a tremendous amount of effort.
“At the time of his departure, he was one of those players you wanted on the field every week because it felt like others weren’t putting in the same level of commitment, and he made a significant impact.
“He was playing in a more advanced position and scoring crucial goals.
“When Manchester United decided to sell him, I thought, ‘Wow, what is happening here?’ But I would love to see him back at Manchester United now.”
Manchester United has already secured a deal for a midfielder this summer, signing Ederson from Atalanta, and they plan to make another addition in that position.
Players such as Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton have been mentioned as potential targets, while McTominay has not been widely considered for a return.
Instead, he will be concentrating on Scotland’s World Cup journey, which begins against Haiti in the early hours of Sunday morning, UK time.
McTominay has been dealing with a stomach issue, causing him to miss training on Thursday, but he is anticipated to be fit for the match.
