Amad Diallo came off the bench to score a dramatic late winner as Ivory Coast defeated Ecuador 1-0 in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Philadelphia.

The Manchester United winger struck in the 90th minute to hand the Elephants all three points and end Ecuador’s 19-match unbeaten run, which stretched back almost two years.

The result gives Ivory Coast a strong start in Group E and boosts their hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time in their World Cup history.

Amad makes decisive impact from bench

Diallo was a surprise omission from the starting lineup as Ivory Coast returned to the World Cup for the first time in 12 years.

However, the winger proved decisive after being introduced in the second half.

With the match heading towards a goalless draw, Wilfried Singo surged forward on a powerful run before finding Diallo, who calmly opened his body and guided a left-footed finish into the bottom corner.

The late goal sparked celebrations among the Ivorian players and supporters, while Ecuador were left stunned after frustrating their opponents for most of the contest.

Ecuador waste chances as unbeaten run ends

Ecuador created several opportunities but failed to make them count.

John Yeboah and Alan Minda both struck the crossbar during the first half, while veteran striker Enner Valencia hit the post from a tight angle after the break.

The South Americans did not register a shot on target until the 68th minute when Gonzalo Plata forced goalkeeper Yahia Fofana into action.

Ivory Coast also came close earlier in the second half, with Nice forward Elye Wahi hitting the crossbar.

Despite entering the tournament with an impressive defensive record of 12 clean sheets in 19 matches under coach Sebastian Beccacece, Ecuador could not prevent Diallo’s late intervention.
