Senior pastor Poju Oyemade has addressed growing calls for religious leaders to become more involved in Nigeria’s political and social challenges, saying pastors have already played their part and should not be expected to do everything.

Speaking during a sermon, Oyemade recalled a conversation with a prominent politician who was surprised to see influential business executives, bank executives, and other accomplished professionals serving in church as ushers and volunteers.

According to him, the politician remarked that Nigeria could experience significant change if people of such capacity applied the same commitment to national development.

Reacting to frequent demands for pastors to “come out” and fix the country’s problems, Oyemade said religious leaders are citizens just like everyone else.

“We have done our work. Don’t call us beyond what we have done. We are all citizens together. Please leave us alone,” he said.
