Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has urged his players to stay focused ahead of their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash with Japan, describing the Asian side as one of the strongest teams in the competition despite Brazil entering the match as favourites.

The five-time world champions will face Japan in Houston on Monday, with a place in the last 16 at stake as Brazil continue their pursuit of a record-extending sixth World Cup title.

Corporate Training

Brazil topped Group C after collecting seven points from three matches, recovering from an opening 1-1 draw against Morocco with convincing victories over Haiti and Scotland.

Ancelotti demands focus ahead of the clash

Speaking before the knockout fixture, Ancelotti insisted Brazil must be prepared for every scenario against a Japanese side that has impressed throughout the tournament.

“We need a lot of things: A strong mind, a strong heart, a clear mind,” the Italian said.

I think we have to be ready for anything that might take place in a knockout match, and a lot can happen in a knockout match.”

He added: “I think the team is ready. They’re motivated, they’re confident.”

Vinicius Junior has been Brazil’s standout performer with four goals, while Matheus Cunha has scored three.

Neymar is also available after making his return from injury as a substitute in the group stage, although winger Raphinha remains sidelined with a hamstring problem.

Japan target another upset

Japan reached the knockout stage after finishing second in Group F with five points, following a draw against the Netherlands, a 4-0 victory over Tunisia and another draw with Sweden.

Head coach Hajime Moriyasu believes his players are united and capable of causing another major upset.

“All the players will do what they can for the team and contribute,” Moriyasu said.

“The team is united, and that feeling is getting even stronger now.”

Japan have built a reputation for challenging football’s traditional powers after memorable victories over Germany and Spain at the 2022 World Cup, although they are still chasing their first-ever win in a World Cup knockout match.

Brazil hold a dominant record in meetings between the two nations, winning 11 of their 14 previous encounters. However, Japan claimed a memorable 3-2 friendly victory in their most recent meeting in October 2025.

The winner of Monday’s tie will advance to the Round of 16, where either Norway or Ivory Coast awaits.
