USA attacker, Folarin Balogun, has now become the fourth player to score a goal and also receive a red card in a FIFA World Cup knockout match.

Balogun was on target as USA defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in the World Cup Round of 32 encounter in San Francisco Bay Area Stadium earlier on Thursday.

The 24-year-old later stepped on the ankle of Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic, and as a result, was sent off.

Other players who have been sent off after scoring in a knockout match are Zinedine Zidane (2006 World Cup final), Ronaldinho (2002 World Cup quarter-final) and Garrincha (1962 World Cup semi-final).

Reacting to Balogun’s red card after the match, USA coach Mauricio Pochettino said at his post-match interview, “Balogun? Never intentional, never a red card.

“Watching it after on TV, it was never the intention to step onto the player; it’s a normal action in football that happens by accident.”
