Russia has issued a strong rebuke to the United States following comments suggesting that Ukrainian drone strikes on deep-target Russian energy facilities could help accelerate an end to the ongoing conflict.

Ukraine has progressively scaled up a retaliatory campaign using long-range unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to strike oil infrastructure, refineries, and military sites within Russian borders. Kyiv has consistently defended these operations as a balanced response to Moscow’s persistent missile and drone barrages against Ukrainian civilian centers and electrical grids.

The strategic utility of the strikes came to the forefront during a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. When asked about the campaign, President Trump appeared to endorse the pressure strategy.

“It’s an escalation, but it’s also an escalation that can help lead to an end,” Trump noted.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio similarly voiced backing for the operations, expressing expectation that the structural damage inflicted on Russia’s energy infrastructure would create necessary leverage to open serious diplomatic negotiations to end the war.

The Kremlin dismissed the US assessment, maintaining that heightened military and economic pressure will not coerce the Russian leadership into making diplomatic concessions.

“We see certain misconceptions within the White House administration — that by escalating military pressure it can help move to a peace settlement. That is a mistaken view,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Peskov cautioned that the cross-border strikes would likely prolong the campaign rather than truncate it. He added that the Russian military would respond by “creating a larger security zone”—a phrase traditionally used by Moscow to signal its intent to capture and occupy additional territory in eastern Ukraine to push Ukrainian launch positions further back.

The strategic disruption caused by Kyiv’s drone campaign remains substantial. Hits on major oil depots and processing plants have triggered localized supply shocks inside Russia.

Despite being one of the world’s leading crude exporters, Moscow has been forced to enact temporary refined product export bans, with over 90 percent of Russian regions reporting localized fuel shortages or enacting distribution rationing.
