Nigerian clergyman, Pastor Chukwuemeka Ohanere, popularly known as Pastor Odumeje, has criticised some religious leaders in the country, insisting that pastors have a responsibility to speak against poor leadership and injustice.

In a recent statement, Odumeje expressed disappointment with what he described as the silence of some pastors regarding government failures. He made reference to Pastor E.A. Adeboye while questioning whether religious leaders are fulfilling their duty to challenge wrongdoing.

According to him, a true pastor should not shy away from condemning bad governance, as religious leaders should not be influenced by political benefits or personal interests.

“I don’t want to talk about Pastor Adeboye because do you know what it means to be a pastor? A pastor should rebuke a bad government, they don’t benefit from it. I’m disappointed with our own set of pastors. My generation feels like a failure. The way I’m angry, eehhh,” Odumeje said.

The clergyman also turned his attention to Nigerian politicians, accusing them of misusing public resources while citizens continue to face hardship.

He argued that elected officials are expected to represent the people, serve their interests, and remain accountable for their actions.

“Our politicians are lavishing our resources, yet we keep praising them with the same resources we sent them to manage for us. Every politician is there to represent the citizens, serve the people, and remain accountable to them,” he added.

Odumeje further claimed that many Nigerians are unaware of their rights, alleging that some leaders use public funds to provide better opportunities for their families while ordinary citizens struggle.

His comments have generated conversations about the role of religious leaders in holding governments accountable and whether pastors should take a more active stance on national issues.
