Popular Nigerian comedian and actor, Chibunna Stanley, better known as Funnybone, has stirred conversations on social media after sharing his views on the relationship between faith, trauma and emotional healing.

In a post shared on his Instagram page, the comedian argued that becoming born again does not automatically erase childhood trauma or behavioural dysfunction, stressing the need for the church to pay greater attention to mental and emotional well-being.

According to Funnybone, many Christians mistakenly believe that avoiding vices such as substance abuse or sexual immorality is the ultimate sign of transformation, while overlooking deeper emotional wounds that continue to shape their behaviour.

“I hope that one day the church understands that some personality traits have nothing to do with spirituality, and that being ‘born again’ doesn’t erase childhood trauma or behavioural dysfunction,” he wrote.

The comedian maintained that unresolved trauma often operates beneath the surface, influencing how individuals think, react and relate with others.

He noted that some of the most difficult personalities he has encountered identify as born-again Christians, adding that spiritual rebirth should not be viewed as a substitute for emotional healing.

Funnybone further emphasised that therapy, religion and spirituality can coexist, encouraging believers to seek professional support where necessary.

“Yet, the heart can still be deeply wounded, bitter, or unkind because unresolved trauma often shapes subconscious reactions,” he added.

His comments generated mixed reactions among social media users. While some agreed with his position and praised him for drawing attention to mental health issues within religious communities, others insisted that the Holy Spirit plays a vital role in helping believers overcome emotional and behavioural struggles.

One user, @kelexofoedu, argued that being born again marks the beginning of the healing process, stating that the Holy Spirit guides Christians in overcoming challenges such as anger and other negative traits.

While another user, @mike_chigbo_ugochukwu, maintained that many church goers fail to experience genuine transformation because they focus more on miracles than developing a personal relationship with God through studying the Bible.

The issue has continued to generate debate online, with many weighing the balance between faith-based healing and professional mental health support.
