Jordan Henderson has completed a surprise move to Chelsea, revealing that the opportunity to join the Stamford Bridge club was one he could not turn down.

The Blues reportedly convinced the 36-year-old midfielder to leave Brentford after manager Xabi Alonso identified the need to add more experience to his squad.

Chelsea quickly agreed personal terms with Henderson after making their interest in the free agent clear, with the former Premier League title winner signing a two-year deal. Speaking after completing the move, Henderson said he was excited by the challenge and the opportunity to work under Chelsea’s manager.

“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” Henderson said. He added: “I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction.

“For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.” Henderson, who has made 463 Premier League appearances, recently suffered a freak injury while representing England at the World Cup.

The former Liverpool captain injured his left forearm after falling while attempting to climb over advertising boards following England’s victory over tournament co-hosts Mexico. The injury forced him to undergo surgery and ended his World Cup campaign prematurely.

Despite the setback, Henderson remains determined to compete for more trophies after winning eight major honours during his time at Liverpool. The midfielder made 32 Premier League appearances for Brentford last season as the club narrowly missed out on European qualification.

Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso explained that his decision to bring in Henderson and Danny Welbeck was based on creating the right balance between youth and experience within the squad. Alonso said: “You need the right balance of personalities, of maturity stages, early twenties with early thirties and in between, players in different stages of their careers.

“There’s not a formula for that, but there is a feeling for that. For me, this is as important as tactics. First it is the team spirit. After it is playing good football. After it is winning games. I felt much more responsible for the team than in my earlier years as a player. I wanted to not just think about myself but think about my team-mates and about how we were going to play and about supporting the young players.”

Henderson’s arrival is expected to provide Chelsea with additional leadership and experience as Alonso continues to shape his squad.
