Fulham manager, Alvaro Arbeloa, has stated why Nigerian defender, Calvin Bassey aligns perfectly with his playing style, while also suggesting that the Super Eagles star has the potential to emerge as the team leader.
He made this statement after Bassey’s commendable performance in Fulham’s 1-0 win over Stuttgart at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon.
The Nigerian international showcased a robust defensive effort, contributing to the Premier League club’s clean sheet in their final pre-season match.
In his post-match comments, Arbeloa lauded Bassey’s attributes and elaborated on why the defender fits his tactical framework.
Arbeloa told Fulham media, “Calvin is a proper and top player for my style of game because we need to defend so high and leave a lot of space behind. He has everything.”
The former Real Madrid defender further commended Bassey’s attitude and dedication, indicating that the Nigerian could assume a leadership position within the team.
“He is a humorous individual, but when it’s time to work, he is always the first to step up. I have great admiration for Calvin, and he has the potential to be our leader,” he added.
Bassey has become a pivotal player for Fulham since his arrival at the club in the summer of 2023, following a less than stellar period in the Eredivisie.
The former Ajax defender has since regained his top form in the Premier League, netting four goals and providing one assist in 101 appearances across all competitions
