Iran and the United States traded strikes overnight into Monday, marking their first direct military exchange in over a month and threatening to shatter weeks of relative calm.
The escalation began on Sunday when the US military conducted a targeted strike against two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, located near the Strait of Hormuz. Captain Tim Hawkins, spokesperson for US Central Command (CENTCOM), confirmed that the action was taken after observing Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces preparing to deploy sea mines into the critical shipping lane.
CENTCOM defended the move as a necessary measure to eliminate an imminent threat to commercial shipping and protect global energy routes. Iranian state media reported casualties among military personnel and civilians on the island following the strike.
In response, the IRGC condemned the US strike as a “strategic and deadly mistake” and launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks directed at US military installations in Jordan.
Jordanian armed forces reported that their air defense systems intercepted eight incoming projectiles over the kingdom’s airspace, neutralizing them before they could impact civilian areas.
The exchange marks the first military clash between the two nations since late July, interrupting Washington’s recent shift toward applying economic sanctions over direct military action. Following news of the strikes, global oil markets reacted immediately, with Brent crude rising 2.8% to $90.57 a barrel and US crude climbing 2.7% to $85.64 a barrel.

Trump in recent weeks has focused on increasing economic pain for Iran rather than military actions, claiming last week that the US’ financial strength will move the country “toward a very big victory.” The US Treasury Department has threatened damaging new sanctions on countries that refuse to cut economic ties with Iran, calling it an “economic D-Day.”
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Reuters on Sunday the department was likely to unveil weekly new secondary economic sanctions on Iran, focusing at first on banks.
“You’re going to see a lot more of these every week,” Bessent said ahead of a Group of 20 finance leaders meeting. “We’re starting with the banks, and we’re telling the banks it’s not okay to have Iranian money and to aid the regime.”
