US President Donald Trump has responded to a request for a pardon from Lindsay Clancy’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, saying it’s a “state situation” and there is nothing he would be able to do.
Clancy is accused of murd£ring her three children in 2023 in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Reddington admits that Clancy k!lled the children, but says she shouldn’t be held criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.
Attorney Reddington had publicly urged the president to consider a pardon during an appearance on Good Morning America on September 8.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump suggested that the case is “actually a state situation, not a federal”.
“It’s a very sad situation,” Trump said. “I certainly heard that, but look, it’s very sad. There is no winner there. There’s no win no matter what you do. Three children are dead.”
Reddington made his plea to the president on Good Morning America when he was asked questions about Clancy’s alleged k!lling of her children in January 2023.
“I would hope that you would consider this young lady – the type of person she is and what she’s been through – and consider a pardon,” he said at the time.
Addressing reporters, Trump praised Reddington’s performance as an attorney and said that he hopes a resolution can be reached.
“He’s a good attorney,” Trump said. “I’ve heard from other people he’s a very good attorney.
“I hope they can work something out,” he continued. “That’s something they have to work out.”
Clancy’s defense team has not disputed allegations that she killed her three children, aged between 5 years old and eight months old. The former labor-and-delivery nurse from Boston pleaded not guilty to the murd£r charges specifically, with her defense team suggesting that she had been suffering from postpartum psychosis.
During the trial, it was argued that she had suffered from hallucinations and delusions following the birth of her third child.
The case ended in a mistrial after jurors could not agree on a verdict. Roni Carlson, the jury foreperson, told NBC10 Boston that a male juror admitted to having “reasonable doubt.”
“But I’m still not going to say that she’s not guilty by reason of insanity,” the male juror told the foreperson.
