The Oyo State Government has confirmed the arrest of five suspected terrorists in connection with an attack on a military camp on the outskirts of Igbeti in Olorunsogo Local Government Area. Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal disclosed the arrests in Igbeti on Monday after being conducted around the scene of Sunday’s attack by the Commanding Officer of the 81 Battalion, Lt Col. Innocent Asogwa.
According to a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, Lawal said the five suspects were arrested wearing military uniforms, adding that further arrests were expected. He said the military had deployed at least 120 soldiers into the bush in pursuit of other suspected attackers. Lawal also provided details about the fire that damaged an Operation Burst vehicle and structures at the military camp.
He said grenade launchers used by the attackers ignited cooking gas cylinders on the premises, resulting in the fire. The deputy governor also addressed the deployment of the state’s newly procured surveillance aircraft, saying it regularly conducts exercises but cannot remain permanently airborne.
He said the aircraft would remain available for security operations and reconnaissance when required. Lawal further announced the establishment of an emergency committee comprising the five adjoining local government councils of Olorunsogo, Oriire, Saki East, Orelope and Irepo.
According to him, the committee will immediately provide necessary support to security personnel operating in the areas and liaise with the state government to ensure prompt assistance. The deputy governor assured residents of Igbeti and the wider Oke-Ogun area that the Oyo State Government remained committed to protecting lives and property.
