A drug dealer has been sentenced to 12 years and nine months in prison after a public Wi-Fi connection helped Metropolitan Police officers trace him to an address where he was found hiding in a wardrobe.
Joel Louis, 34, of Wembley, North London, was identified during an investigation into the “Bobby” county lines drug operation, which supplied cocaine and heroin in north Kilburn.
Police began investigating the operation after examining mobile phones seized from children suspected of involvement in drug supply. According to police, the person controlling the drug line had taken steps to conceal his location by running devices through a virtual private network.
Investigators were eventually able to identify Louis as the person operating the line after his phone connected to public Wi-Fi at an address where he was staying. Acting on the information, officers executed a warrant at the Wembley address on July 7.
Louis attempted to hide inside a wardrobe but was discovered by officers. Bodycam footage captured an officer telling him: “Come down, mate.” During his arrest, Louis asked officers: “How did you find me?” Subsequent analysis of his phone showed that he was receiving more than 100 calls a day and had a contact list containing nearly 250 drug users. Police said Louis had also told some contacts that he owned a firearm. A search of the address resulted in the seizure of Class A drugs, including cocaine and heroin with an estimated street value of £8,800, approximately £8,000 in cash and six mobile phones.
One of the phones was identified as the device used to operate the “Bobby” drug line. Officers also recovered a loaded firearm concealed inside a box, 13 rounds of 9mm ammunition, including three rounds loaded into the firearm’s magazine, a machete and a flip knife.
Louis was charged on July 7 with two counts of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, possession of an offensive weapon in a private place, possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition. Detective Constable Lauren Gresty, who led the investigation, said Louis had recruited young people to distribute drugs around north Kilburn.
“Louis recruited numerous young people to move drugs around north Kilburn, exposing them to violence, intimidation and criminality for his own financial gain,” Gresty said. “County lines devastates lives. It is far more than drug dealing. It causes damage to local communities through its connections to acquisitive crimes and anti-social behaviour. Louis believed he could hide from police to further his offending, but this result shows our tenacity in going after those who cause the most harm in London.”
Louis was subsequently sentenced at Harrow Crown Court to 12 years and nine months in prison for offences connected with the supply of cocaine and heroin in north Kilburn.
