Nigerian-American singer Ojay Wright has spoken about what he described as one of his biggest culture shocks after relocating to Nigeria and beginning to date Nigerian women.
During an interview, Wright said he was surprised by how frequently he was asked for money when interacting with women he was dating.
“Everybody just asks for money. They’re always asking for money. I think that was the biggest shock for me.”
He compared the experience with what he was accustomed to abroad, saying people could interact without financial expectations being raised almost immediately.
“Cause over there people just do what they do. But over here you cannot even say hello or hi without getting billed.”
According to Wright, he encountered the situation repeatedly during his first few months in Nigeria.
“I haven’t met someone in the first two months are not billing me.”
He clarified that he was not opposed to spending money while dating, but said the frequency of financial requests was what surprised him.
“It’s not like I wouldn’t spend. But it’s money, money, money here. That’s the only thing everybody talks about.”
