Alexis Mac Allister has admitted he is “very sad” after Liverpool decided against offering him a new contract, despite the midfielder insisting he remains fully committed to the club.

The Argentina international joined Liverpool from Brighton in June 2023 on a five-year deal, but has watched team-mates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch receive improved terms this year.

Mac Allister revealed he had opportunities to leave Liverpool during the summer but chose to remain at Anfield.

Mac Allister promises to keep giving his best

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid, the 27-year-old opened up about the club’s decision.

“I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract which, of course, makes me very, very sad,” Mac Allister said.

The midfielder stressed that he has continued to give everything for Liverpool since arriving at the club and promised supporters that his commitment would not change.

“I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it,” he said.

“At the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn’t get mine. Of course, there is still time.”

Mac Allister added: “The fans don’t need to worry because I will give my 100% until the last day I am here.”

He also confirmed that there were opportunities for him to leave during the summer, amid reports linking him with Manchester City.

“There were options to leave this summer. I think right now I’m in the right club and I have the right mindset to give 100% for this club,” he said.

Iraola backs midfielder amid uncertainty

Mac Allister was part of Liverpool’s Premier League-winning team in 2024-25 but described the following campaign as disappointing on both a personal and team level.

He made 55 appearances last season as Liverpool finished fifth, while manager Arne Slot was subsequently dismissed.

New boss Andoni Iraola initially used Mac Allister from the bench in the league opener against Newcastle but has started him in Liverpool’s following two matches.

Iraola has also made it clear that the contract situation will not affect his assessment of the midfielder.

“The important thing is he wants to be here,” the Liverpool boss said. “He hasn’t been with us a long time but he has been an important player and I rate him very highly.”

Mac Allister, meanwhile, remains enthusiastic about working under Iraola and believes Liverpool can enjoy a successful campaign.

“Since I came to pre-season and worked under Andoni, I could see something special,” he said.

“I love this club. I love the fans. I know very well this is an amazing club and this city has something very special. I love being here.”
