A Nigerian woman has sparked a debate online after warning companies against paying their staff below the minimum wage.
In a post shared on Facebook, Chioma Ifeanyi-Eze, said it is against the law for anyone to be paid below N70,000, which is the minimum wage.
She asked employees to read up on the National Minimum Wage Act for the consequences of paying their workers less than the minimum wage.
She stressed that Nigeria is governed by laws and that companies can not pay salaries randomly.
‘’DEAR NIGERIAN EMPLOYER
Nigeria’s national minimum wage is N70,000 per month. It was signed into law in July 2024, replacing the previous N30,000 minimum wage.
Kindly do not pay any employee less than the minimum wage of N70,000. It is illegal to do so.
Go and read the National Minimum Wage Act for the consequences of paying less.
You cannot just pay what you like, or what you think you can ‘afford’. There are laws governing the land. You are subject to those laws.

While some netizens agreed with her, others argued that companies should be allowed to pay accoridng to the revenues they generate.
