A Nigerian woman, Chisom Chigbo, has stated that marrying her husband when he had nothing was one of the best decisions she ever made.
The mother of three shared her story in a Facebook post on Monday, September 28, 2026 to celebrate their 11th wedding anniversary.
She explained that she married her husband because she loved him, saw his values and believed in the man he could become.
Reflecting on the journey, she recalled the difficult days when they didn’t know where the next meal would come from and had to trek because they couldn’t afford transport fare.
She narrated how the would go to the market at night to buy cheaper leftover meat and broken tomatoes.
Celebrating how far they have come, she added that they are living in some of their answered prayers.
“I MARRIED A BROKE GUY! 11 years ago, I married a man who had a job, but financially, he had very little. He was building from scratch, and honestly, there wasn’t much to his name,” she wrote.
But I didn’t marry him for money. I married him because I loved him. I married him because of the values I saw in him. I married him because I believed in the man he was and the man I knew he could become.
And looking back 11 years later, I can confidently say that marrying this man was one of the best decisions of my life.
Because we didn’t start with plenty. We started with US. There were days we ate our last and genuinely didn’t know where the next one would come from. There were days we trekked because we couldn’t afford transportation.
Days we jumped from one okada to another. Days we went to the market at night to buy leftover meat because it was cheaper. Days we bought broken tomatoes because that was what our money could afford.
There were times we struggled to meet up with rent. Times school fees for the children were another thing to worry about. Times we had to sit down and figure out how to make everything work with the little we had.
We have seen lack. We have seen struggle. We have had seasons where we looked at our situation and wondered how things would ever get better. But somehow, we kept going. Together.
And look at us today. 11 years later, we are living in some of the things that our younger selves could only dream about in a malaria-induced sleep.
We are literally living in some of our answered prayers. And sometimes I look at our lives now and remember those two people who were just trying to survive and build a life together with very little.
Who would have thought? Even when people doubted us. Even when some people silently thought I had made a mistake. Even when some were asking, “Who are you?”
Somehow, life has brought those same people around to ask, “How are you?” Honey, look at how far God has brought us.
I cannot tell the story of my life without telling the story of you.
We didn’t have everything when we started, but we had love, faith, friendship, determination and the willingness to build together. And God took our little and multiplied it. Which of His blessings can I deny? Happy 11th wedding anniversary to us, my love.
