The Black Stars of Ghana and their new head coach, Carlos Queiroz, have parted ways after back to back losses in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
Ghana have parted ways with head coach Carlos Queiroz following a difficult start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed on Thursday that it had reached a mutual agreement with the Portuguese coach to end his second spell in charge of the Black Stars.
Queiroz only returned to the Ghana job on September 3, but his latest stint has now ended after just two AFCON qualifying matches.
The Black Stars suffered consecutive defeats during September’s international window, losing 2-0 to Ivory Coast before falling to a 4-2 defeat against Gambia.
Those results ultimately brought an early end to Queiroz’s return to the national team.
In announcing his departure, the GFA said the decision followed discussions between both parties and was taken with the interests of the Black Stars and Ghanaian football in mind.
Queiroz also addressed his exit, saying he had returned to Ghana with the intention of helping strengthen the national team and contribute to the development of the country’s players.
However, the 73-year-old acknowledged that recent results, alongside other challenges during his tenure, contributed to the decision to end the partnership.
It is the second time Queiroz has left the Ghana job in a matter of months.
The former Real Madrid manager was initially appointed in April as Otto Addo’s replacement and subsequently guided Ghana at the World Cup. The Black Stars progressed from the group stage as one of the best third-placed teams after drawing with England and losing to Croatia, before their campaign ended with a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the round of 32.
Queiroz stepped down following the tournament but returned approximately two months later for a second spell.
His latest departure leaves Ghana searching for another head coach as the Black Stars look to recover from their opening setbacks in the race to qualify for AFCON 2027.
The GFA has yet to announce who will take charge of the team following Queiroz’s exit.
