A US Air Force service member has died after falling during a rappelling demonstration before a college football game at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The incident occurred on Saturday night ahead of the University of Texas at San Antonio’s game against Navy.
According to Task & Purpose, four members of the Air Force’s 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, were scheduled to descend from the stadium rafters as part of UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans game. Video shared online appeared to show one participant losing control during the descent and falling to the field.
Football staff and medical personnel provided immediate assistance before the service member was taken from the stadium on a stretcher. The San Antonio Fire Department said the person was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Air Force subsequently confirmed the death. The service member’s identity has not been released.
The 6th Combat Training Squadron trains Tactical Air Control Party personnel, who coordinate air support from the ground alongside Army and Marine units. A Nellis Air Force Base spokesperson said the incident was under investigation and further information would be released when available.
