Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has expressed his frustration with the team’s recent performances following their humiliating 4-1 defeat to Como in the UEFA Champions League.
The Portuguese midfielder admitted that United struggled to apply enough pressure on their opponents and lacked the movement required to compete effectively. He also suggested that conceding an early goal affected the team’s confidence.
“Conceding early makes us go into the game with a mood of defeat,” Fernandes said.
He continued,
“Unfortunately for us especially when it comes to the players – those who join expect to win trophies, win games, and reach the highest level. But unfortunately, that’s been very difficult at this club in recent years. That’s the situation.
The United captain also questioned the team’s approach out of possession, explaining that the decision not to press Como aggressively allowed the Italian side to gain confidence and control the game.
Fernandes, however, left the responsibility for tactical decisions to manager Michael Carrick and his coaching staff, insisting that United needed to be braver under pressure and press higher up the pitch. Meanwhile, Carrick described the performance as unacceptable and accepted responsibility for the disappointing result, which extended Manchester United’s winless run to seven matches.
United will now be under pressure to respond positively in their upcoming fixtures as scrutiny intensifies over their performances and Carrick’s position as manager
