Former Nigerian captain, Sunday Oliseh, has sparked public debate on social media after comparing the legendary 1994 Super Eagles generation to the current national team.
In a recent interview with The Play Zone Podcast, Oliseh argued that the current Super Eagles players lack the high-level “quality and top-tier European club representation” that defined the historic 1994 squad.
Oliseh’s comments have generated diverse reactions on X, with the majority supporting him while others disagreed.
Here are some comments gathered on X:
@ObanlaWasiu, “Oliseh set shed blood, lost teeth and gave Nigeria a footballing identity world could not ignore. Many who earn a living talking football today stand on the recognition those legends brought our nation. They didn’t just wear the jersey, they paid its price. They are the golden generation.”
@aisayaomichael, “I don’t agree. We have bad management and poor coaching.”
@naijasportscrib, “1994 team were more dedicated. You would usually see them fight on the pitch. They were raw talented footballers. These days people without talent are sent to academies to learn football. Yes they are!!! We had some generational players back in the days and we can’t duplicate that anymore. Truth only.”
@AyodejiOmoyemi, “You guys keep talking as if the 1994 set were the first to win the Nations Cup for Nigeria. After their set Mikel set won the Nations Cup as well in 2013 yet this particular 1994 set like to believe they own Nigeria football like we owe them our lives. Make dem go sit down.”
@yinkus4real2019, “It’s an insult on the class of ‘94. This is a team that won us our first AFCON after 14 years, took us to our first World Cup ever, became the first African team to reach the top 5 of the FIFA rankings. Same set went on to win Africa their first gold medal at the Olympics.”
@Yinkzworld2, “I was privileged to watch many years of Sunday Oliseh generation, what time that was. I watch the next generation up to the present one and I can get why this is such a debate. One thing is, the commitment then it’s higher, it was like the greatest honor to wear the jersey then unlike now.”
@ROWLEX007, “Yes I agree 100% egbon they were disciplined and talented during their era but this present team is just so disastrous and not United,so many social media influencers claiming to be footballers things need to change asap.”
@Oluwase67385, “Yes he’s right and am glad so many agree to gbis in the CS but not few did not agree and am sure they are the GenZ , hoe many players in this current Super Eagles is playing for top clubs in the Top 5 leagues now?”
@daposunloye1, “No comparison. The ’94 squad was built on a brotherhood from 1990-1994: Algiers ’90 (2nd), Senegal ’92 (3rd), Tunisia ’94 (Champions). Ranked 4th/5th in the world at their peak. No past or present team comes close. Most people didn’t watch them play.”
@nnabros, “Of course Oliseh is right. Why is this a question.”
@CEzeifem, “Absolutely. Apart from Osimhen, how many tie 1 players do we currently have? None. That tells you everything you need to know.”
@walexywalexy, “Whoever thinks otherwise didn’t see the Super Eagles during the days of Oliseh. Also, Whoever compares Mikel to Oliseh started watching football when Roman Abrahimovic took over Chelsea.”
@SoccerChattabox, “We’re talking about a group of players that failed to qualify for successive World Cups, the last one being a 48-team tournament. I don’t think it’s about the clubs they play for, but more about how good they are as players. The crop Oliseh played with won the AFCON and made the World Cup 3 times in a row.”
