Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Santi Cañizares has criticised the club’s decision to renew Vinicius Junior’s contract, arguing that the Brazilian forward’s behaviour has damaged his reputation and made a potential transfer difficult.
Cañizares believes Madrid should have allowed the 25-year-old to leave when his previous contract expired in 2027, rather than committing to a new deal
The former Spain international also questioned Vinicius’ continued involvement in the team, insisting that his performances and conduct no longer justify the club’s commitment to him.
Cañizares criticises Vinicius’ value
Speaking on COPE radio, in comments reported by Defensa Central, Cañizares described the contract renewal as a mistake and cast doubt on reports linking the winger with Arsenal.
“Maybe I am the odd one out, but I see the decision as a mistake. For me, renewing Vinicius’s contract was a mistake, because the player’s value had been completely written off. And I don’t believe Arsenal’s offer was real,” he said.
He added that Madrid should have considered allowing the Brazilian to leave on a free transfer rather than pursuing a sale.
“I don’t see any possibility of selling him to Arsenal, not because of his ability, but because he is a young man with a lot of problems, and not every club wants him,” Cañizares said.
He also argued that major clubs consider a player’s public image when making transfer decisions, contrasting Vinicius with Yan Diomande, whom he described as having a positive reputation for his character.
Mourinho reportedly working to restore Vinicius’ form
Cañizares went further by questioning whether Vinicius should continue featuring regularly for Madrid, claiming the forward currently offers little to the club in terms of performance, dressing-room influence or public image.
However, reports cited by Defensa Central suggest Madrid are still working to help the Brazilian rediscover his confidence and physical sharpness.
Manager José Mourinho is reportedly providing encouragement and support as the club attempts to restore the winger to his previous level.
Vinicius is also said to understand that he must improve his defensive contribution, particularly by tracking back to support the team’s left-sided defenders.
