The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has congratulated the Flamingos, Nigeria’s women’s Under-17 national football team, following their historic qualification for the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The Flamingos made history by becoming the first African team to reach the final of the competition after defeating Brazil 3-1 in the semi-final in Morocco.
The victory also handed Brazil its first defeat in the tournament, as the Nigerian youngsters delivered an impressive performance against the highly rated South American side.
In a statement, the NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, Esq., praised the players for their resilience, determination and impressive comeback after losing their opening match 2-1 to Poland.
Director said the team’s achievement had brought pride to Nigeria and lifted the spirits of citizens amid the country’s economic challenges.
“You have made our country proud. Your achievements have lifted Nigerians from hunger, poverty, and sadness imposed by the ruling party’s ruinous policies,” he said.
The Flamingos’ journey to the final has been marked by several impressive victories against strong opponents.
They recorded a 3-1 victory over two-time champions DPR Korea in the group stage, ending the Asian side’s eight-year unbeaten run in the competition.
The Nigerian team subsequently defeated Mexico 2-1 in the Round of 16 before securing a 1-0 victory over Venezuela in the quarter-finals.
They completed their impressive run to the final with a convincing 3-1 triumph over Brazil in the semi-finals.
Ahead of Saturday’s final against Japan, the NDC spokesman urged the players to remain focused and give their best as they seek to win the trophy.
“The NDC and Nigerians are fully behind you,” Director said, encouraging the team to bring the World Cup trophy home.
The Flamingos will now have the opportunity to make further history by becoming the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
