Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has criticised the Confederation of African Football, CAF, for its decision to change the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, to a quadrennial event.

Lookman said the change is unfortunate for Africans, limiting their opportunities to enjoy the AFCON tournament.

The Atalanta player shared his thoughts with reporters following Nigeria’s 3–1 victory over Uganda in the 2025 AFCON tie on Tuesday.

The decision has been made and you can’t really change it,” Lookman, who has won the African Footballer of the Year award in the past, said.

“It is a shame for Africans in terms of being able to get the tournament two years that we’ve been used to; it is a disappointment,” he added.

Patrice Motsepe, the president of CAF, recently announced that, starting in 2028, the AFCON will be held every four years.

This change follows the 2027 edition in East Africa, marking a shift from the tournament’s long-standing biennial format, which has been in place since 1968.
