The Anambra State Government has challenged Peter Obi over claims about the state’s finances when he was governor, saying records show loans and unpaid obligations remained after he left office.

They say he broke key promises about debt and paying workers on time.
When Obi was governor, he promised to quit the presidential race if he left Anambra in debt.
He also promised to resign if workers weren’t paid on time.
The government claims he broke both promises.
They released a 2006 letter allegedly from Obi’s former Chief of Staff, Chuks Iloegbunam, pleading with Obi to pay the Water Corporation workers who hadn’t been paid since February.
The letter said workers had children and deserved their salaries.
The government says Obi left office in 2014 with outstanding external debts of ₦127.4 billion.
He also left unpaid salaries, pensions and gratuities for teachers and Water Corporation staff.
Obi denies this.
He says he left office without unpaid salaries or obligations to contractors.
His administration cleared over ₦35 billion in historical gratuities and arrears.
He vowed to stop campaigning if the state government could prove he left debts or owed anyone money.
President Tinubu’s aide challenged Obi to honour his pledge and quit the race, saying Anambra had confronted him with facts.
Obi’s media aide said the presidency shouldn’t interfere and promised a detailed response from his team.
